Ablagerungen im Prophylaxe Kopf - Werkstattblick

The image of the medical profession is closely linked to thoughts and images of white coats, sparkling clean rooms and even the smell of disinfectant. These images are due to the need and demands of one's own patients for hygiene in the practice.

But even with the greatest care, it is sometimes unavoidable that the exact opposite happens in places you don't even think about.

Today we would like to briefly draw your attention to an issue that we often encounter in our workshop and which is actually not compatible with the idea of a clean dental practice.

It's about deposits in the prophylaxis head.

The problem:

We received this head from the prophylaxis room of a practice. A practice that we know personally and which, in our experience, pays attention to hygienic conditions.

It seems hard to imagine that this head was used until recently for deep cleaning of the oral cavity of patients.
We encounter such a situation more often and it is difficult to prevent it even with regular sterilization. In addition to problems with hygiene, this encrusted deposit mix causes premature wear of the gears, bearings and intermediate drives in the prophylaxis head.

What can be done about it?

The reason for the deposits is, for example, polishing agents that are used for prophylaxis. Furthermore, dirt residues can get into the head. The problem cannot be completely prevented.
In principle, it is always advisable to sterilize the instruments after each use. However, if dirt has already penetrated the head, the moisture during sterilization can contribute to the hardening of the dirt residue.
To prevent this, it is advisable after each treatment to oil the angle piece and the head manually with attachment not only from below, but also in the collet.
If, however, severe encrustations have built up at some point, the only thing that will help is to completely dismantle and clean the head. If you are experienced, dismantling should be possible with the right tools . Otherwise, professional cleaning in a specialist workshop is advisable. This is because they often also provide a guarantee that covers any damage to the head during cleaning.
