Carbon brushes for electric motors
The carbon brushes on dental motors and laboratory handpieces wear out over time. Motor carbon brushes usually consist of a graphite part, a spring and a holder. The task of the grinding carbon brushes is to transfer current to the collector via a sliding contact. Most electric dental motors that are operated with carbon brushes have 2 individual brushes. An exception to this is the Sirona ® SL motor, for example, which has a complete carrier with 2 carbon brushes, the brush holder. The carbon brushes wear out more or less quickly depending on the frequency of use or type. The contact is interrupted and this is often noticeable by the motor "stuttering" and/or it losing power. As long as the motor armature still has enough support, this problem can be solved by replacing the carbon brushes. The carbon brushes should always be replaced in pairs. It is also advisable to clean the old graphite dust from the motor before inserting the new carbon brushes. It should be noted that brushless motors do not have motor carbon brushes.
