O-rings
O-rings are round, sealing elements. They get their name from their shape, which resembles an "O". They are usually round and relatively flat. The O-ring is a seal, usually inserted into a groove. When the parts are connected - for example, when the ISO connection is pushed into the engine - the O-ring is deformed and seals both parts together. Over time, O-rings can harden or sometimes tear. Then it is important to quickly replace the defective O-ring so that you can continue working without problems. It is advisable to always have enough O-rings in stock, as they are subject to natural wear.
Seals
Seals are also usually used to seal the connection between two elements and to prevent water and air from escaping. Seals - also called "gaskets" - do not necessarily have to be O-shaped. The blue 4-hole and 6-hole seals for turbine couplings and air motors are particularly well known in dentistry. 4-hole seals are usually used for couplings or air-operated motors without light, 6-hole seals when the turbine coupling or motor is operated with light. There are also seals that are used to seal the water channel or the air channel. They look like small tubes that seal by squeezing, similar to O-rings. These are often used for Sirona ® contra-angle handpieces and for NSK ® contra-angle handpieces.
Xenon high pressure lamps and LEDs
In order to operate turbines, contra-angle pieces and handpieces with light, special xenon lamps or LEDs in various qualities are used. Turbines are usually illuminated via the turbine coupling. Here it is important to check the manufacturer of the coupling when purchasing the light bulb. For example, for a Kavo ® Multiflex® you buy a lamp or LED suitable for the Kavo ® coupling, even if a Sirona ® turbine with a Kavo ® connection (usually with the ending LK) is placed on the coupling. Contra-angle pieces and handpieces are illuminated via the motor. So when purchasing it is important to pay attention to the brand of the motor, regardless of the contra-angle piece. For example, a Sirona ® motor with a Kavo ® E25L contra-angle piece would require a xenon lamp or LED suitable for a Sirona ® motor. There are exceptions to this procedure at W&H ®; here the LED is built into the instrument, particularly in the newer models. Classic high-pressure lamps and LEDs differ in terms of light quality and price. Xenon high-pressure lamps are cheaper, but have a warm white light. LEDs should ideally be similar to daylight and display the treatment area as brightly and realistically as possible. LEDs often differ in terms of the light cone and color. Some LEDs are bluer. Overall, LEDs are said to have a long service life if the voltage is set correctly, which puts the higher price into perspective. Since LEDs are not constructed like high-pressure lamps and do not work with the same voltage, they may not always light up immediately. In this case, it is often advisable to turn the LED over.
Carbon brushes for electric motors
Motor carbon brushes usually consist of a graphite part, a spring and a holder. The task of the carbon brushes is to transfer current to the collector via a sliding contact. Most electric dental motors that are operated with carbon brushes have 2 individual brushes. An exception to this is the Sirona ® SL motor, for example, which has a complete carrier with 2 carbon brushes, the brush holder. Over time, the carbon brushes wear out and the contact is interrupted. This is often noticeable by the motor "stuttering" or it losing power. As long as the motor armature still has enough support, this problem can be solved by replacing the carbon brushes. The carbon brushes should always be replaced in pairs. It is also advisable to clean the old graphite dust from the motor before inserting the new carbon brushes. It should be noted that brushless motors do not have motor carbon brushes.
